This is a really dark and terrific novel. Sharp, cold, dark, murderous like a sharpened knife. This short story is really dreadful and depicts really dark characters. The sea is black, the plague takes his booty and lives don’t matter. For her first book, Jennifer Giesbrecht succeeds to tell a really good story where horror, magic, and death transport us to a sordid town at the end of the world with brilliance and panache.

Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke And Other Misfortunes by Eric LaRocca

Image
The cover is beautiful, and the book is ok. Ok in a good way but I was looking for something more “horrific”. It is also a very short book, you need like 3 hours to go over the last page. All stories are really good, it is creepy, sordid, morbid, and dark, a little bit like Tales from the crypt but with a modern twist. The second story is the best and is a really good foundation for a Dread scenario (the RPG). The first story is good but I can’t remember anything related to horror, don’t get me wrong it is a really good story and the dialogues are really good. They are depicted like chat conversations on the internet and emails and the author found a way to keep them very entertaining. The last story is ok but short. A really good read. You can find the book on the publisher's website .

Satan burger by Carlton Mellick III

Image
Carlton Mellick III is crazy but in a sweet and intelligent way. This book is terrific, and I don’t remember having so much fun with a book for a long time. Maybe the last time was when I was reading the short novels from In Nomine / Magna Veritas the french tabletop RPG (not the crappy version for the USA). I have the feeling that maybe Carlton Mellick III used some kind of weird automatic writing technique because he is able to find new ideas in almost every paragraph and everything is random and insane but in his world everything makes sense and that blew my mind. The characters depicted are all losers, a bunch of shitty, crappy humans with no morale whatsoever and it is a delight to see them never improved. The dialogues are really funny and surreal. This book is absolutely different from everything, the story and dialogues will turn nuts some very conservative people but in fact, if you look into it really well, it is so hilarious and intelligent that this work can't even be...

Between two fires by Christopher Buehlman

Image
Let’s say it right away, this book is one of the best reads I have ever had. I was hooked after the first chapter until the last sentence. If you are looking for a happy story, don’t read this book because it is grimdark, really dark. The author did his homework and it is historically accurate, he also succeeded to add something related to fantasy based on Judeo-Christian mythology. And there is no fun, every chapter is almost a succession of miserable situations, miserable people, living in a miserable time where superstition, death, suspicion, and disease rule civilization. Also in this book, I love the characters because there absolutely all imperfect, there are no heroes in this book. It is not a real spoiler but there are a lot of demons in this story and Buehlman describes them as Jerome Bosch painted them. The story is pretty solid as the dialogues are good, sharp, and entertaining. If you are looking for a book based on medieval times with a grimdark setting, well don’t l...

The library of the dead by T. L. Huchu

Image
I found this book by chance at my local public library, the cover and the theme were appealing. T. L. Huchu is an excellent author and knows how to describe characters, atmospheres, and locations. The dialogues are great and the author uses street or sustained language depending on the person, which is really good to give them life. The introduction is perfect and you want to dive into this story from the beginning. At some point, I was a little bit bored by the different short stories but in fact, it was a good opportunity to discover each character and their personality. And at some point, I will not spoil you but THE thing happened and the book shifted into something else. Darkness, discomfort, pain, and violence are in place. Trust me the wait is worth it and this short novel of less than 400 pages will entertain you for a few good hours.

We have always lived in the castle by Shirley Jackson

Image
Laborious very laborious. I did not enjoy this book, it was flat and boring. To be honest, the cover by William Teason sold the book, I wanted to have this illustration on my shelves and the 1963 print. Shirley Jackson is really good with characters’ descriptions, tone, and mood, I found the plot dull and I was looking for something much darker. However, the book’s description seemed promising. Well, it is also the beauty of reading, sometimes magic does not work.

The haunting of hill house by Shirley Jackson

Image
I definitively understand why this book is a classic and I really enjoyed the novel. Shirley Jackson knows how to write a story and tips to keep the reader engaged. I really enjoyed how the characters are developed at the beginning and the description of Eleanor’s travel to the house is such a great transition to Hill house. The book is not about horror, blood, or gore. If you are looking for such things, you may have to look for another book. The haunting of hill house is about fear, the fear you carry in your flesh and in your mind. The house is the trigger. Take the forest as an example. If you walk with friends during the day everything is alright but if you walk in the same forest at night and alone, the experience is different. Primal fears will trigger a lot of anxiety, the fear of the dark, a little noise, the fear of the beast, the fear to get lost, or the fear to be alone. The mood and atmosphere in this novel are a delight, The author will allow you to see and feel eve...
